On completion is far and away the most common when working with an established company. 50/50 (meaning half in advance and half on completion) Happens sometimes, though this tends to more often be the case in private commissions. It makes sense when the artist probably does not know the client or have any references to check. Full upfront payment isn't something that I recommend (it makes sticking to schedules much harder without some payment due at the end) but happens on occasion.

Yes, once the art is approved, the artist sends an invoice with payment instructions (mailing address, wire transfer info, etc.) My invoices typically just say "for services rendered: cover artwork for blah blah blah" and the amount. Ideally, payment is sent immediately upon receipt of the invoice. Most companies have a 30 day pay cycle so you generally get paid within a month after billing (NSB does 60 days, wizards of the coast pays almost instantly, it can vary). Following up late payments is unfortunately a very routine practice though. Usually a friendly "it's been 30 days" reminder does it, though sometimes you find yourself chasing down payment months later. This is why it's a good idea for artists to keep comprehensive records of their invoicing (when they were sent, if they've been paid, etc.) to make sure that all is accounted for.

I recommend, in private commission situations, a half up front and half on completion policy and the print res file not be delivered until final payment has been received. It's not rude, it's just that individuals who don't have commissions coming and going every day like a big publisher probably don't have the organization and procedures worked out and it ensures that there are no long payment delays or accidents.David Palumbohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14842762706216506725noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973655316950141572.post-73050646290002158932011-11-20T19:30:57.056-05:002011-11-20T19:30:57.056-05:00A very thoughtful, well-written post.

Are they itemized or do they just say "one cover painting", etc.

Very professional, and the stuff I doubt they teach in school.

Congratulations!ceshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02228169390182512752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973655316950141572.post-19289692978008056002011-11-19T18:06:40.435-05:002011-11-19T18:06:40.435-05:00Wow, a friend hipped me to this and I'm so gla...Wow, a friend hipped me to this and I'm so glad.
