Stragglers

I tend to often miss posting work as it is finished or released.  Sometimes because it was sitting under a non-disclosure for awhile and by the time I am free to share it has escaped my attention, though more likely because I'm enthusiastically on to the next painting and figure "oh right, I'll do that later..."  As it turns out, I've completed a fair number of pieces in 2013 that I want to and am able to show but have neglected to.  Of course there are quite a few more that are still waiting for client permission, I suppose they will wait for 2014.  So here some odds, ends, and between-the-cracks pieces I missed posting over the course of this past year.  2013 was easily my most diverse in terms of clients and subjects with work ranging from Rolling Stone Italia, the New Yorker, and the Wall Street Journal to my more typical fantasy clients such as Tor and Wizards of the Coast, peppered inbetween with personal pieces and experiments.  For any interested collectors, a good many of these are still available. I believe the dimensions are all accurate but it is possible that one or two may be slightly off. And so, in alphabeticalish order, here's a whole bunch of stuff:

Equoid

16x20, oil on panel

It's been some years since I last painted a unicorn, but I think this one may have upped the stakes. Where does it go from here? For an excellent short story by Charles Stross available at Tor.com

The Watching Trees

30x40, oil on panel

I try to make a point of doing a decent sized personal piece every couple months or so. This one has been sitting in my head for a year now and I finally made that opportunity so that I could show it at Illuxcon 6. As with some of my other recent personal work, this is much more about mood than specific narrative which makes it extra difficult for me to verbalize any thoughts that I have about it. This sort of painting feel more to me like sounds and tactile sensations than words. If I could name a painting with the sound that branches make when they scrape in a very gentle breeze, I probably would have named it that.

Mars Attacks: Invasion!

12x16, oil on panel

I realized last night that I have literally dozens of paintings done this year which I've neglected to post to the blog! Figured I'd start with the biggest chunk, my nine card sub-set of Mars Attacks: Invasion. As I've mentioned elsewhere, it was a huge honor to work on this set and fun to get pulpy with it (and silly on occasion as well.) Looking forward to seeing the full release!

Theros art update!

So it appears that all of my pieces for the upcoming Theros block of Magic: The Gathering have been released early! This was a tremendously fun setting to work in and I'm happy to see that, so far, these look to be decently playable for the most part.

Survivors

"The Titanic", 20x30, oil on panel

Here are the first two covers in a YA series I've been doing for Aladdin Books. Each volume is the story of a pair of kids (different kids with each book) who survived infamous disasters in American history. Working on a new one as we speak...
